The health care product is usually loosely defined as a service. The authors develop a more precise definition of the health care product, line , and merchandise mix. A bundle-of-elements concept is presented for the health care product. These conceptualizations help to deal with how health care providers can segment their market and position, promote, and price their products. Though the authors specialise in hospitals, the concepts and procedures developed are applicable to other health care organizations.

Healthcare and hygiene products are an important sector in the field of medicine and surgery. The range of products available is vast but typically they are used either in the operating theatre or on the hospital ward for the hygiene, care and safety of staff, and patients. Table 5.6 illustrates the range of products used in this category and includes the fibres and/or materials used and the method of manufacture.

In 2017, the Medicines & Healthcare products regulatory authority (MRHA) within the UK worked collaboratively with stakeholders to supply guidance on HF aspects of design for medical devices and include drug-device combination products (MRHA, 2017). Its titled, “Human Factors and usefulness Engineering - Guidance for Medical Devices Including Drug-device Combination Products” and is meant for manufacturers of all device classes, drug-device combination products also as notified bodies liable for assuring the standard of these devices.m
